Festive Family Fun: 12 Christmas Activities to Create Lasting Memories

The holidays are a magical time for families— it’s when everyone comes together to create cherished memories. From traditional classics to creative new traditions, there are so many ways to spend time with your loved ones and enjoy the festivities. In fact, here are 12 Christmas activities to try during the holidays

1. Decorate for the holidays

Kick off the start of the season by decorating the Christmas tree and the rest of the house as a family. Go Christmas shopping for new decorations, or create homemade decorations from scratch at home. Hang up the Christmas wreaths and stockings, and scatter Santa Claus figures around the house!

2. Christmas crafts and DIY decor

Engage in creative family activities by making your own Christmas cards and decorations. From handmade ornaments to DIY wreaths, the possibilities are endless. Set up a crafting station with various materials, and let each family member unleash their artistic flair.

3. Holiday movie marathon

Snuggle up and get cozy, because we’re going on a Christmas movie marathon! Set up the living room with popcorn, steaming mugs of hot cocoa, and a makeshift ticket booth for added fun. Then, get into your themed jammies and choose a few movies for the night. Some of our favorite Christmas classics include Elf, Home Alone, The Polar Express, Klaus, and The Santa Clause.

4. Baking extravaganza

Gather ‘round, it’s time to bake a few things for Christmas. From gingerbread houses to sugar cookies, there are tons of sweet treats to create together. Let each family have a hand at each step, like mixing the dough and cookie decorating. Once you’re done, sample your delicious creations or wrap them up as a gift for your loved ones!

P.S. Remember to save a plate of cookies for Santa! ;)

5. Cook a Christmas feast

On the more savory side, there are plenty of other Christmas recipes to cook. For example, roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, casserole dishes, glazed ham, and more!

6. Outdoor winter adventures

After a day of spending at home, it’s time to head outside. Build a family of snowmen or challenge each other to a snowball fight. Next, create snow angels, go ice skating, and explore a winter wonderland in a nearby forest. For a more special experience, you can plan a sleigh ride with the whole family or go on a drive around town to see the Christmas lights and other decorations.

Before heading out on a winter adventure though, do pack your diaper bag with the essentials, like a thermos with a warm drink, your baby’s formula, and extra outer layers (e.g. hats, gloves or mittens, and jackets) to stay toasty and warm.

7. Family game night

When it’s snowing too hard outside, it’s time for a family game night. Bring out the board games or indulge in a Christmas trivia session or two. Some of the most popular games during the holidays are charades, I Spy, a candy cane scavenger hunt, Heads Up, and more.

8. Neighborhood caroling

Spread holiday cheer by organizing a family caroling night in your neighborhood. Prepare some classic carols, dress in festive attire, and go door-to-door singing. Not only is this a delightful way to connect with neighbors, but it also adds a touch of community spirit to your Christmas celebrations.
